Launching of "Substitute of Revolution"

Currently, me and my classmates are working on a group project called "Substitute for Revolution."

It's an online interactive psychological drama about a depressed man who wants to escape the real world. The character is called Patrick Winter.

The user is put into the position of the character, a depressed and psychologically disturbed man living in a run down inner-city apartment. As the user explores his apartment, they discover gateway objects, which lead to experiencing altered states of mind. When awaking back in the real world, the user and character find that parts of his altered state have manifested in the real world apartment.

Make some time and come over for our launch on 17th of May, at the VR Centre at Building 91, Victoria Street, Melbourne.

Join the Facebook group for further updates on the exhibition!

Married Life - Disney Pixar "UP"

Up is an animated film, which revolves around the main character, Carl Fredricksen, (protagonist) who has a childhood dream to go on an adventure to Paradise Falls in South America with his wife, Ellie, since they both of them were kid. They were so captivated by an explorer Charles Muntz, who was their idol. They wanted to follow his footstep. After Carl’s wife died, he started to lead a lonely life and things happen. Here is where he met a boy who would become his sidekick; in exploring the place he has longing to go since he was small.

This is my favorite scene in this animated film as through out the 4 minutes, the storytelling is in the form of audio and visual only. The way it was structured is so strong that i could feel the moment and also emotion. Really love this part.

Are You Gonna Be My Girl

I found this on facebook. Posted by my fried. Simple and nice usage of text within space. This was done using After Effect 7. I got no idea who did this but it's pretty good.

This reminds me to the opening title sequence of the film "Cathc Me If You Can." Credits to the person who did this.

The Opening Cinematic of The Beatles Rock Band

This is the opening Cinematic for The Beatles Rock Band Game. Love this animation and also the concept of creating it. The design of it as well. I watch the making of it and one interesting fact about this animation is its has a lot of hidden message through out the whole animation and all of it relates to how the beatles was created. Its like another form of storytelling to the journey of it.

One of the part is at the very beginning when the camera tilts down from the city view and it passes though a brick wall. On the brick wall, there were many posters and actually the information in it was all about the beatles on how they started on the band. Interesting as the production was so detail even though the camera tilts down very fast and could not read what is written on the posters. They very detail in every aspect. A good example to learn from.

Fallen Art by Tomas Baginski

Fallen Art presents the story of General A, a self-procliamed artist. His art, however, consists of a deranged method of stop motion photography, where the individual frames of the movie are created by photographs made by Dr. Johann Friedrich, depicting the bodies of dead soldiers, pushed down by Sergeant AL from a giant springboard onto a slab of concrete.

Fallen Art (Polish Sztuka Spadania) is the name of a 6 minute, animated short film written and directed by Tomas Baginski. It features Romanian band Fanfare Ciocarlia's song "Afalt Tango." The film was produced and created by Platige Image, a VFX company. In 2006, it received the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award.

Abstract Art

This was my first assignment that i submitted for concept development. Was given the choice to draw or even take photographs> i took the option of taking photographs and this techniques was taught to me by my lecturer, Dr. Chris Barker and i admit i didn't do much research in completing this assignment as my concern at that time was deadline so managed to get this done in time.

What i did was took some photographs and used the technique of frame blending in after effect. This was not good at all but i would love to try this again and giving some thoughts of making it better in terms of the flow and content of it. I think it was a good start of knowing how to utilize this effect.

Would love to try more in future using this technique but different approach.

Mind's Eye - Minor Project

Currently working on my minor project. It's a 3d animation with 2d animation as well in it. Looking for this piece to go for a bout 1 minute to 1 minute 3o second.

The title of this short animation is "MIND'S EYE," where its like a mixture of reality, illusion of one'1 mind as well as the mind is playing the trick. Its all illusion within the mind.

Completed the script for it as well as the storyboard and i'm working on completing the color script. As soon as i have completed the color script, will post it up here.

Time + Perspective

This is of of my latest assignment handed in for concept development, where the approach i took was on creating a generative stuff. Basically, the theme for this assignment was time + perspective and was supposed to create animation loops.

Basically, got the idea for creating this loop when i was walking around in melbourne, particularly in a music store, where i saw this old record player playing this record. As i was looking at then record being played and it went in spiral, there were shape and form on the record and as it turn, it created a loop.

What i did next was going into after effect and creating all of this sphere shape and animating it to move in such a way that its like a devise to hypnotized. I only realized about this when it was completed. After that, it was editing in final cut pro with adding some sound to it.

The catch for the sound is i used a song by Elvis Presley, a song which portray the king during his golden age as related to the records. So in a way, it reflects the design and also audio for it. What i did next was to make the loop synchronized with the song as when it is complete, the loop looks like its following the song.

Form + Image

2nd version

1st version

This was a work i submitted for concept development, where the theme was Form + Image. My initial idea was to do some stuff using flash with scripting but that didn't work out, so instead i went on doing and created images by using words.

Rather than using shapes to create and image, i had an idea to use words to form an image, i.e kaleidoscope image. So here i managed to do that.

I used some scripting in after effect to create 3d text layer and it was position randomly within the space. Then i used some effects within final cut pro to create the kaleidoscope effect. I submitted the first 1 and after that i did edit it again and came out with the 2nd version of it.

"Meet Meline" tells the story of a little girl named Meline, that will be faced with an extraordinary event. A strange little creature will appear on her life. So does Meline know that little creature, is it real, what will happen when she meets this mysterious creature for the first time? The audience follows Meline as she goes through many emotions from curiosity to excitement, and also fear or even passion." Source: meetmeline.com

Virginie Goyons & Sebastiien Laban have been working on this animation for about two years now and the best part of it is, the only two of them who are doing this and also they kept track on the production process of the whole film on a production blog and the blog could be viewed at meetmeline.com.

One thing i like about this animation is the realism in it as well as the color. The timing was perfect as well.

Short Animation - ALARM

Agents + Behavior: Suicide (Character Animation)

This is my first 3d character animation. First time animating a character using Maya.

At first, it was kind of hard getting to control all the points with different tools for different part of the body. That was during the first day but as i went on with the help of Yang And Jin, understanding the concept and method on how to animate, things got quite fun even though what i did was not good movement but i will try more on my own animating character as it was fun.

I use Maya for animating and use final cut pro to edit it. Overall it was a new experience and i would surely want to try to animate more so that i get use to it and i would love to do 3d animation for my major project next semester.

Thank you as well to Deepak Mistry for the model and rig that i downloaded from creativecrash.com

I would appreciate any comment given on the animation as its a learning process for me.

Syd Mead@RMIT

On 23 of march, i was lucky enough to get a chance to hear a talk by Syd Mead as well as meeting with him in person. The talk was pretty interesting and learn a lot form the man himself. The two things that i could not forget what Syd said was "If you do this and don't get paid then it's a Hobby" and "Imagination is much more important than knowledge."

The second one was a quote by Albert Einstein actually but these were the things that i remember well from his talk. This guy is brilliant and fantastic. Looking at his work gives me inspiration.

I would also love to thank my lecturer, John Power for helping me out on the ticket for the talk by Syd. Without his help, i would not be there. Thanks a lot John.

Goodbye Grandma

This morning about 3 a.m, i lost someone very dear in my life. My Grandmother.

"Innalillahi wainna ilaihi rajeoon."

To Allah we belong and to him is our return. May Allah give me patience, forgive my grandmother and give her a best place in "Jannat ul Firdous. Amin.

I feel sad as i could not be there by her side performing the final rituals before burial.

Many fond memories with grandma as she used to take care of me when i was 6 years old. She would wake me up early in the morning and give me some money to buy nasi lemak so that i could take it to kindy. My grandma was big in size, so at that time i use to treat her stomach as water bed. I will run and jump on her and lie down on her stomach, but she will never scold me.

The last day i met her was few days before i came to melbourne. It was saturday, 20 February 2010 and i kissed her as usual before i leave. Those are the last picture of memory that i could capture in my head.

Love you Grandma.

Inspiring the Inspirer

"As i was walking towards him, I said no... Oh no... killing is not going to help me... Revenge is not good... It's going to keep on war for this generation and the next generation...
Let me let him live and then I will be free...
I am free... and everyone is free"

Patrick Chamusso, 2006

This was the words uttered by Patrick Chamusso in 2006 after a motion film was made based on his life story. A story that inspired me now for who i am and what will i be in future.

I start with these quotes from what he said. The quotes were strong enough and made me to think.

Why i chose to start my blog and my first posting on Mr Patrick is because of what i learned in class during the first week. The theme was Play + Inspiration and also not forgetting week 2 theme which is Community + Practice. So this is why i started the blog with individuals who inspire me and my life. In coming post i will include more individual who inspires me.

Why? Because whatever i do in my creative work, these are the elements around me, which pops out in my head and will influence the direction of how i transmit messages into creativity using the different medium around me.

Let me tell detail about myself a bit. I'm Razeef Mohd. From Malaysia but currently i'm in Melbourne doing my postgraduate studies. I'm doing my master in creative media (animation and interactive media) at RMIT University.

Thats a brief information about me and i would love to conclude this first post with the picture of Mr Patrick Chamusso and also a clip of the film, Catch a Fire the ending to share with all of you and i managed to get this clip from youtube, not forgetting as well the production team of this film. a great film...
